I was just making sure the cable box was on the right channel for the VCR (yes, I still use one) so it could get something I wanted to watch, and ran across Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader

Ugh...

I saw three questions before I got fed up:

Q1: Chiang Kai-shek was overthrown in 1949, what country was he the leader of?

A1: China

Ok, that's fine. Not too hard to guess based on "Chiang Kai-shek" sounding ... well.. Chinese.

Q2: Which one of the following is a quadruped?
Honey Bee
Elephant
Flamingo

A2: Elephant, it's the only animal there.

!!?!?! really? A flamingo isn't an animal? Or a bee? Right answer, but for completely the wrong reasons!

Q3: How many common nouns are in this sentence: Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.

A3: "I'm going to say two, Humpty Dumpty, and wall."

Gah! Yes, "two" is the right answer, but clearly she didn't know what "common noun" means.


How did we get to be a country where it was cool to have forgotten nearly everything we learned. When did ignorance become trendy?
