Rolled oats don't make good oatmeal.

Quick (minute) oats don't make good food.

Buy steel cut oats in the bulk section of the market. It should cost less than $2/lb at most. Usually less than that. If you get it in a steel can or a box it'll cost way more, and is no different.

Soak 1 cup of oats in 2 cups of water overnight, or a day. I think you can get away with two days soaking, but that's pushing it.

Strain the water off, and add two cups of fresh water, and 1/8 tsp salt, and bring it to a very low boil. Stir it periodically.

After 5 minutes, add a handful of raisins or dried cranberries, if you like those things.

After it's boiled for about 10 minutes total the water should be almost entirely absorbed, and it'll have changed consistency.

Taste it to make sure it's soft enough. It should be a little firmer than al-dente.

Turn off the heat and stir in 2 Tbsp. of butter.
You can add powdered milk too (before the syrup) which gives it a creamier taste without adding

Add maple syrup, about 3-4 tablespoons. (to taste, it's possible to overdo it)

Add some milk, maybe 1/2 cup or so. (I do it by what looks right)

This makes 3 breakfasts for me, it re-heats really really well, and tastes just as good on days 2 and 3.

I put a banana in mine, and it's just perfect.
