HCFC is bad, but it's no worse than sugar. Or more accurately, all fructose, no matter if it comes from HFCS or sucrose, is toxic, and bad for you. Really bad for you.

A calorie isn't just a calorie. Different sources are metabolized very differently, fructose is metabolized closer to ethanol than glucose or fat, and literally poisons you slowly leading to all sorts of chronic health problems.

"low fat" foods aren't, because "low fat" foods have the fat replaced by sugar, which is worse for you.

Thankfully, milk sugars are fine, as are fruits (but not fruit juice) because of the fiber in the fruit. "sports drinks" are terrible. The food and drink industry and the FDA almost certainly know how bad it is for us, but refuse to do anything about it. Lots of our current way of eating is based on seriously faulty "research". We're systematically poisoning our population because we're afraid to admit we were wrong.

1.5 hours long. It's totally worth it.

I was skeptical that I wanted to spend an hour and a half on youtube when I started watching, but it's very compelling, I watched it on one sitting. There's a bit in the middle where he goes through a lot of fancy biology speak, but it's not important you understand it all, he knows it's over a lot of people's heads even though his audience is mostly medical students. He Does a good job of summarizing the processes.

It's horrifying. I have to seriously reconsider how I eat, and I don't even eat that poorly.

To quote Darxus from his LJ post:

[Fructose in the form of HFCS or sugar] not only completely fails to trigger your body's awareness that you have eaten enough, but it actively inhibits it, making your brain think your starving. Which has caused us a lot of problems, because it's in everything.

Robert H. Lustig, MD, UCSF Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology.
Has a great graph showing what happens when, primarily, he gets obese kids to stop drinking anything but water and milk (instead of soda and juice). They stop being obese.
It's similarly bad in High Fructose Corn Syrup and sucrose, but glucose is fine because the feedback loop works fine. Lactose is fine.
