I left the "fucking" silent.

Someone has a couple numbers mixed up, so I get calls for "Nellie" occasionally. It's always on my answering machine.

What amazes me is that when they hear *my* voice saying, "You've reached [$number]. Please leave a message." they don't immediately think, "huh, that doesn't sound anything like Nellie, maybe I misdialed." No, they just bluster forward blindly, as if they didn't hear the outgoing message at all.

They probably didn't. Nobody listens, nobody sees or hears what they don't expect, and nobody looks up.

Just now I was able to *69 immediately after the call.

I was trying to tell them, "Hey, I've gotten a couple messages, so you've probably got the wrong number and Nellie isn't getting your messages."

I was trying to be helpful and friendly and stuff.

here's how the call went:

Riiiing!

Her: Who is it? (more of a demand than question)
Me: Uh, it isn't Nellie, I'm just calling...
Her: Hold on.

Different Her: Hello?

Me: Hi. I've gotten a couple calls for Nellie, so I thought you might have the wrong number written down or something...
DH: Oh I'm so sorry, it won't happen again.
Me: Don't worry about it, really, I...
DH: Are you $number?
(small discussion about phone numbers)

then it devolved into her insisting that she's *so* sorry and it'll never ever ever happen again while I tried to tell her that I wasn't even slightly put out or offended or annoyed or anything. The *only* reason I called was to make sure Nellie got her calls.

And then she hung up on me.

What's funny is that I was trying to be helpful and polite and friendly, but all she heard was "you fucking asshole, don't you ever call me ever again, ever, or I'll tear your larynx out!"
