male/female vs. men/women
Oct. 17th, 2011 03:28 pmThe words are "men" and "women", not "males" and "females" Unless you're talking about animals.
When you talk about "a group of young black males" it sounds like you're talking about gorillas or impalas or elephants or something. They're men. You should be saying, "a group of young black men"
I was listening on the radio today on WGBH about theshooting death killing / murder of Danroy “DJ” Henry a year ago today. The show was (more or less) about how black men are more likely to get killed by police, and how racism is endemic, etc. You've probably heard it all before.
It really bugs me when people use "fancy" words to sound smart, even though they're the wrong words. e.g. using "I" when it should be "me". In this case, not only does it make the speaker sound stupid, but it reinforces the "black people are animals" meme that seems to pervade the subconscious of ... well, everyone, according to the radio show.
They're men and women. Call them that.
