Plessy v. Ferguson was decided in 1896. It determined that it was OK for blacks and whites to have separate, segregated railroad cars, so long as the cars were identical. "Separate but equal" was the law of the land.

Brown v. Board of Education, in 1954, determined that "separate but equal" was, simply, impossible, and forced the integration of public schools.

It was ~60 years between those two cases.

It's been 56 years since Brown.

So... what's next? Federal recognition of same sex marriage?

It's about time.
