I went to Home Depot today for my bi-monthly dose of outrage and disappointment.

My expectations were fulfilled. Mostly.

Except for one orange-apron wearing fellow who seemed to be both knowledgeable and ... forthright.

I overheard him telling another customer who was looking for hex bolts with threads that go all the way to the head,

"We only have conventional hex bolts, unfortunately, you'll have to go to a real hardware store for those."

Then, when I was looking for sash cord and thought I was just being blind, overwhelmed by the selection of less than 20 kinds of string and rope.

I gave up looking and asked. He said, "We don't carry sash cord."

"Seriously?"

"Yep, you'll have to go to a good hardware store. We have clothesline; it'll work, but it won't last very long. I wouldn't recommend it."

He gets credit for not saying something stupid or just lying to me like, "windows these days use springs or friction, they don't have sash cords", but minus 10 billion for some place like the Home Despot not carrying sash cord. What the fuck were they thinking? This is New England, there's an awful lot of houses with "old" windows 'round here.

Other disappointments:

Only two kinds of kitchen dustpans, both suck. One was so flimsy they were broken in the box, the other couldn't keep the edge flat against the floor.

I overheard another customer saying, "Are there any that aren't special order!?"

Wood is getting progressively crappier. Those laminated boards one might use for a large shelf (or a cabinet) which used to be 3/4" thick are now 21/32"

There were only two people running cash registers, despite lines at both of them and it being a late summer Sunday afternoon and the store was crowded.

No single wrenches, only sets, no big wrenches at all.

No fingernail brushes, anywhere, and it took 3 guys to find *any* hand cleaner, and even then they only had tiny little bottles.

Now I remember why I don't go there unless I really have to.
