In response to a drive by shooting that left an off duty cop dead, the city of Newark, NJ has passed an ordinance that requires small restaurants (15 or fewer people) to have an armed guard after 9:00 PM, or close by 10:00 PM.
I'm not sure how this is going to solve any problems. What do they imagine a guard is going to do? Shoot back? Block the bullets with his bulletproof vest? Take note of the car's license plate? The very nature of a drive by shooting is that you get zero warning, and the shooters drive away very quickly.
I don't understand how people like Councilman Ras Baraka can say stuff as naive and insensitive as, "If they want to stay open that late, they should provide security. If not, they should close"
Is this degree of being out of touch with the real world a symptom of career politicians?
