Noise...

I find it distressing that many (most?) people have what seems like a pathological need to fill all space with sound. Some talk all the time. That's annoying, but eventually they get tired. Some leave the TV on all the time (when restaurants do this it's most annoying, because frequently there's nobody watching it or interested in it, and many distracted by it. Some have the radio on all the time, even if they're not listening to it.

Today (starting shortly) is the Falmouth road race. There's probably 1,000 people milling around talking, waiting for the race to start; runners and observers alike. There's also eleventeen huge loudspeakers blasting music well beyond the capability of the amp so it's all scratchy and clipped. it's painful to be close to, and irritating to hear from afar. Nobody's listening to it, it's just filling up the space. After all, they paid for the speakers and amplifiers, they're damn well going to use them.

The only copper lining (silver would be too good) is that their choice of music is mildly amusing. So far:
Chariots of Fire theme
Footloose
Born to Run
